워싱턴 주변에 살고 있는 한인들의 주거지역은 로스앤젤레스나 뉴욕에서와 같이 특정 지역에 밀집해 있지 않고, 중산층 이상이 주로 거주하는 버지니아주의 페어팩스 카운티와 메릴랜드의 몽고메리 카운티 전 지역에 고루 분포되어 있다. 다만 페어팩스카운티 내의 애난데일(Annandale)에 한인상가 밀집지역이 형성되어 일반적으로 이를 미국인을 포함한 일반인들이 코리아타운이라 칭하기도 한다.
연방 센서스국의 2010년 인구 현황 통계에 따르면, 버지니아주의 한인 인구 7만577명 중 페어팩스의 한인 인구는 4만1356명으로 버지니아 전체 한인 인구 10명 중 6명 꼴로 나타났다. 메릴랜드주에 거주 하는 한인 인구는 4만8592명으로 메릴랜드에서는 몽고메리 카운티(1만7438명)와 하워드 카운티(1만2333명)에 한인 인구들이 몰려 있어 메릴랜드 전체 24개 카운티 중 이들 2개 지역에 거주하는 한인들이 메릴랜드 한인 인구의 61%를 차지하고 있다.

미국의 한인들 어떻게 사나 워싱턴의 한인타운은 어떻게 생겼을까 1 : 애난데일(Annandale) 리국 ・ URL 복사 본문 기타 기능 공유하기 신고하기 한인 상가의 모습, 은행과 식당 등이 들어서 있다. # 워싱턴 한인타운의 특징 미국의 수도 워싱턴에도 한인타운이 있을까? 답은 물론 있다, 이다. 세계 어느 나라를 가던 한국인들이 적어도 1만 명 이상 거주하는 도시에는 한인타운이 형성돼 있다. 워싱턴 지역의 한인 인구는 약 15만 명으로 추산된다. 한국의 어느 중소도시 인구나 마찬가지다. 그러니 워싱턴에도 당연히 한인타운이 존재한다. 한인 수퍼마켓이 있는 쇼핑몰 그런데 워싱턴의 코리아 타운은 다른 지역과 다른 특징이 있다. 우선 한인타운의 규모가 크지 않고 분산돼 있다는 것이다. LA나 뉴욕, 하다못해 애틀랜타만 가도 상당한 규모의 한인타운이 형성돼 있지만 워싱턴은 초라할 정도로 작다. 어떤 이들은 한국의 70년대 모습 같다고 말하기도 한다. 한인 상가로 떡집과 빵집, 식당, 미용실, 옷 가게 등이 있다. 그리고 버지니아의 애난데일과 2000년대 들어 제2의 한인타운이 형성된 센터빌로 양분돼 있다. 메릴랜드에도 엘리콧시티(Ellicot city)라는 동네가 한인타운으로서의 구색을 갖춰나가고 있다. 이처럼 한인타운이 작고 분산돼 있는 것은 워싱턴 지역이 광범위한데서 큰 이유가 있다. 워싱턴이라 하면 흔히 워싱턴 DC를 생각할 수 있으나 이 도시에 사는 한인은 4천 명이 채 안 된다. 15만 명 중에 8만 5천명은 버지니아 주, 6만 여명은 메릴랜드 주에 산다. 한 개 주의 넓이가 한국 사이즈이니 짐작이 갈 것이다. 거리가 멀고 생활권이 조금씩 다르니 한인타운도 작을 수밖에 없고 여러 개로 분산되는 것이다. 한인 사무실이 다수 입주해 있는 건물 # 원조 한인타운 애난데일 가장 대표적이자 먼저 생긴 워싱턴의 한인타운은 애난데일(Annandale)이다. 워싱턴 D.C.에서 남서쪽으로 차로 15분 거리에 있는 동네다. 행정구역은 버지니아 주 페어팩스 카운티의 애난데일 시티다. 이 애난데일은 236번 리틀리버 턴파이크(Little River Ternpike) 도로가 지나간다. 이 도로 좌우에 듬성듬성 한인 타운이 형성돼 있다. 애난데일을 알리는 표시 동네 이름은 한 스코틀랜드 출신 주민이 지었다. 예이츠가 고향 아일랜드를 그리워하는 마음을 ‘이니스프리의 湖島’로 노래했듯 그는 자신의 고향을 흐르는 애난 강(Annan River) 어귀의 마을 이름을 이곳에 붙여 이민자의 향수를 달랬다. 골짜기를 뜻하는 Dale이 뒤에 붙으면서 애난데일의 역사는 기지개를 켰다. 애난데일은 2차 세계대전 이후 수도 워싱턴의 교외 주거지역의 하나로 개발되었다. 그러다 1950년대 후반부터 70년대 초반까지 집중 개발되면서 오늘날의 외양을 갖췄다. 2000년의 애난데일 전체 인구는 54,994명이었다. 그러나 2010년에는 41,008명으로 줄어들었다. 이 지역의 한인 인구는 1990년에는 1,504명이었으며 2000년에는 3,651명으로 센서스조사 결과 나타났다. 2010년에는 한인 인구가 전체 주민의 6.9%인 3,843명으로 10년 전과 비교해 큰 변화가 없었다. 정체되고 있는 한인타운으로서의 모습을 인구가 그대로 보여주고 있는 것이다. 한인 상가의 모습. 식당과 스파, 화장품 숍 등이 있다. # 80년대 말부터 한인타운화 80년대 말 이후 애난데일은 제2의 변화가 찾아왔다. 한국에서 오는 이민자가 가장 먼저 머리에 새겨야 하는 동네로 탈바꿈했다. 이 지역에 한인들이 몰리기 시작한 건 1988년 에버그린 콘도미니엄에 워싱턴 한인회가 이사를 오면서부터. 이 시기 한인들의 주거지도 백인들처럼 워싱턴 D.C.에서 점점 외곽으로 멀어진데다 495번 벨트웨이와 395번 국도 가까운 지리적 이점이 한인업소들의 애난데일 집중화를 불러일으켰다. 애난데일의 한인타운화는 1990년대 말부터 본격화됐다. 눈을 간판으로 돌리면 한국에 있는 것은 보신탕집과 여관 빼고는 다 있다. 부침은 있지만 식당이 25개, 미장원만 18개가 영업하고 있다. 한인 미용실 모습 70년대부터 아메리칸 드림을 찾아 대거 몰려든 1세들은 한식당에서 비즈니스를 하고 이민정보를 나누고 반가운 얼굴을 만나 소주 한잔으로 회포를 풀었다. 또 부동산, 융자, 은행, 목욕탕, 교회, 나이트클럽, 노래방, PC방, 떡집, 기원, 법률사무소, 병의원, 한의원, 여행사, 이발관, 미용실, 제과점, 수퍼마켓… 하다못해 점집, 에어로빅, 탐정도 있다. 한국의 어느 소읍을 그대로 옮겨놓은 듯하다. 이 작은 지역에 들어선 전체 한인업소와 사무실은 3백 개가 넘는다. 횟집에서 한인들이 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있다. # 한인들은 몇 명이나 살까? 비즈니스 공간이지만 애난데일은 한인 주거지역으로서의 기능도 무시할 수 없다. 10여 년 전까지만 해도 패트리엇 빌리지(Patriot Village)는 초기 이민자들이 거쳐 가는 대표적인 아파트다. 지금은 좀 줄었지만 이 아파트에만 1백여 한인 가구가 살았다. 노래방의 모습 아파트 곳곳에서는 김치찌개 냄새가 새어나오고 여기저기서 한국말로 아이들을 부르는 소리가 들린다. 나무 그늘 아래에는 한인 노인, 아주머니들이 삼삼오오 둘러앉아 이야기꽃을 피운다. 인근 콘도미니엄, 타운 홈, 싱글 홈에도 수백 가구의 한인가정들이 흩어져 살고 있다. 초기 이민자들은 한인타운인 이곳에 먼저 닻을 내린 다음 이민생활에 대한 정보를 얻고 직업을 구한 후 2-4년 후에는 새로운 거주지로 떠나가곤 했다. 그야말로 이민자들이 모이고 떠나는 대합실인 셈이다. # 한인타운의 변화 2000년대 들어 한인 1.5세들도 애난데일의 고객으로 등장했다. 그래서 1.5세들을 대상으로 하는 업소들도 여럿 생겨났다. 2010년대 들어서면서 한국식 빵집과 치킨점, 바비큐 점들이 우후죽순 격으로 생겨나 성업하고 있다. 고객도 한인 위주가 아니라 미국인들을 대상으로 하면서 한국식 음식문화를 미국사회에 전파하고 있는 것이다. 음식 한류다. 꿀돼지 식당에서 만난 회사원인 릭스(Rixs)씨는 말한다. “한국음식에는 독특한 맛, 분위기가 있어요. 동료의 권유로 처음 찾았다가 이제는 한 달에 한번은 들릅니다.” 미국인들이 찾는 한인업소는 한식당 뿐만은 아니다. 미장원에는 한인 미용사들의 솜씨에 반한 이들이 붐비고 신라제과, 브리즈 등에는 한국식 빵맛을 찾는 미국인들이 자주 눈에 띈다. 한인 1세들의 사랑방에서 1.5세들의 사교장으로 영역을 넓힌 한인타운 애난데일은 이제 미국인들이 독특한 한국문화를 만나고 이해하는 복합공간으로 변모해가고 있다. 인쇄
