Wound Sizing

LNCtips.com: Wound Sizing

As nurses, we know that wounds should be measured and recorded precisely. And we know that wounds are tracked by their size in centimeters.

Unfortunately, jury members and other non-medical people in the United States are unfamiliar with the metric system. If you tell them a wound is 10 cm long, jury members may picture a wound that is 10 inches long instead of its real length of 4 inches.

As a new legal nurse consultant, you can assist attorneys, and eventually juries, by describing wounds in both centimeters and inches. It’s even more helpful if you can describe how the wound compares to common objects that everyone is likely to understand. The attorney might even hold up that common object in front of a jury one day. (Well, maybe not the ladybug.) So here’s a list of common sizes in centimeters and objects corresponding to that size. Due to rounding, some sizes appear more than once.

CM Inches Object 0.1 cm 0.04 inches Grain of sugar 0.2 cm 0.08 inches Pencil point 0.5 cm 0.2 inches Pea 0.6 cm 0.2 inches Pencil eraser 0.9 cm 0.4 inches Ladybug 1.1 cm 0.4 inches Diameter of AAA battery 1.4 cm 0.6 inches Diameter of AA battery 1.6 cm 0.6 inches Diameter of jeans button 1.7 cm 0.7 inches Diameter of A battery 1.8 cm 0.7 inches Dime 1.9 cm 0.8 inches Penny 2.1 cm 0.8 inches Nickel 2.4 cm 1 inch Quarter 2.6 cm 1 inch Diameter of C battery 2.7 cm 1.1 inches Diameter of light bulb base 3.4 cm 1.3 inches Diameter of D battery 4.3 cm 1.7 inches Diameter of golf ball 6.4 cm 2.5 inches Diameter of tennis ball 7.6 cm 3 inches Diameter of soup can 9.2 cm 3.6 inches Length of regular crayon 10 cm 4 inches Diameter of drink coaster 15 cm 6 inches Diameter of saucer 23 cm 9 inches Circumference of baseball 29 cm 11.4 inches Circumference of softball

You’ll notice that not every size is listed. If you find a wound that’s in-between sizes, use a metric conversion tool. And you can still use the size chart to describe the wound. For example: “The wound was 2.3 cm (0.9 inches) in diameter or a little smaller than a quarter.” Or: “The wound measured 6.1 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter, nearly the size of a tennis ball.”

To answer this question, we start with a brief definition of centimeter and inch, and their purpose. The centimeter and inch units of length which can be converted one to another using a conversion factor which is equal to 0.393700787402. This coefficient answers the question how many inches are equivalent to one centimeter. The value of this multiplier determines the basic value to calculate all other lengths, sizes and other transformations for these units (centimeter and inch), it is enough to know the value, i.e. to remember that 1 centimeter = 0.393700787402 (in). Knowing the number of inches in one centimeter by simple multiplication we can calculate any values. Let’s do a simple calculation using the multiplication:

6.4 (cm) × 0.393700787402 = 2.51968503937 (in)

Thus it is seen that after multiplying by the coefficient we get the following relationship:

6.4 Centimeters = 2.51968503937 Inches

Calculating 6.4 cm to inches formula for lengths and values.

In the calculations for centimeters and inches, we will use the formula presented below that would quickly get the desired result.

Y (cm) × 0.393700787402 = X (in) Y – value of centimeters X – result in inches

That is, you need to remember that 1 centimeter is equal 0.393700787402 inches, and when converting centimeters just multiply the number of centimeters (in this case 6.4 centimeters) by a factor of 0.393700787402. For example, we transform the set of values 6.4 cm, 7.4 cm, 8.4 cm, 9.4 cm, 10.4 cm into inches and get the result in the following examples:

6.4 (cm) × 0.393700787402 = 2.51968503937 (in) 7.4 (cm) × 0.393700787402 = 2.91338582677 (in) 8.4 (cm) × 0.393700787402 = 3.30708661417 (in) 9.4 (cm) × 0.393700787402 = 3.70078740157 (in) 10.4 (cm) × 0.393700787402 = 4.09448818898 (in)

In all variants we multiplied the all centimeters in range from 6.4 (cm) to 10.4 (cm) with the same ratio of 0.393700787402 and got the correct results in calculations.

The calculation using mathematical proportions to convert 6.4 centimeters into inches

To calculate the proportions you need to know the reference value in inches for 1 centimeter and according to the rules of arithmetic we can calculate any value in inches for any length in centimeters. See the next examples. We form the proportion for 3 values our centimeters 6.4 cm, 7.4 cm, 8.4 cm and calculate results values in inches:

1 (cm) — 0.393700787402 (in) 6.4 (cm) — X (in) Solve the above proportion for X to obtain: X = 6.4(cm) × 0.393700787402(in) ÷ 1(cm) = 2.51968503937(in)

1 (cm) — 0.393700787402 (in) 7.4 (cm) — X (in) Solve the above proportion for X to obtain: X = 7.4(cm) × 0.393700787402(in) ÷ 1(cm) = 2.91338582677(in)

1 (cm) — 0.393700787402 (in) 8.4 (cm) — X (in) Solve the above proportion for X to obtain: X = 8.4(cm) × 0.393700787402(in) ÷ 1(cm) = 3.30708661417(in)

All proportions used reference value 1 centimeter = 0.393700787402 inches
