There are 26 Jeju Olle trails/routes that connect and loop around Jeju Island, South Korea. We hiked the Jeju Olle Trail – Route 7 (and 7-1) in mid December. The temperature was around 58°F / 14°C that day. This trail mostly hugs the coastline and has incredible views of the Island. Route 7 is an 11 mile point to point trail. It took us a little over 6 hours to complete. We took a bus back to our starting point at the end of the trail.

Jeju Olle Trail: Routes 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-1, 11 & 12

As we camped more often than not, our days on the Olle Trail didn’t neatly follow the official routes. Having identified a good place to camp, we would often stop before or after the stamp spot that marks the route change. As such our account of the Olle Trail is broken down into our own day by day experience.

If you’re looking for a detailed account of each official route, the Jeju Olle Trail Guidebook is an excellent reference. It’s available for free at Jeju Olle Centres but there aren’t always English copies around. A full PDF of the guidebook is available for download. It can be tricky to view on your phone though so it’s handy to have the actual book. More importantly, don’t forget to pick up your Olle Trail Passport. You can self stamp your progress along the way at the beginning, middle and end of each route, and claim your official certificate when all are completed.

Finding Your Way

Navigating around the Olle Trail isn’t particularly difficult. Wooden arrows on poles or plastic ones on walls lead the way: blue in a clockwise direction, orange for anti-clockwise. Between the arrows you find the frequent red and blue trail ribbons, hanging from tree branches, lampposts or anything else available. One point to note here is that the arrows and trail markers are sometimes easier to spot when travelling in a clockwise direction.

Now while the trail is well marked, a good way to supplement this is by using Korean Map apps. Don’t bother with Google Maps, it’s nowhere near as good. All the Olle Trail routes are marked on both Kakao Maps (iOS/Android) and Naver Maps (iOS/Android). To easily find the route you’re looking for, for example, search for Olle Course 18 on Kakao Maps and Olle 18 on Naver Maps. We recommend trying both apps to see which you prefer. A combination of the two worked well for us.

A Note On Times

The daily times mentioned below are split into total time and walking time. The total time is everything from start to finish with all stops, sometimes including both lunch and dinner. Walking time is the amount of time (roughly) that we spent on the move. As we carry big bags and take a lot of photos and video, this is longer than many would take to walk these routes.

Review of Jeju Olle Trail Routes, Jeju Island, South Korea

First obtain the Olle walking trails book from tourist information counter near the central bus station. From there you can ask for recommendations. I chose the scenic routes and it required walking up slopes which allowed paranomic view of scenery and also along the coastal area which was slippery due to rain. Some routes bring you directly to the beach whereby you can enjoy Jeju famous mandarin oranges and buy souvenirs such as their honeyed tea and famous chocolates! Do ask for discount like for all tourist attractions and at times the lady boss will throw in more pieces of the chocolate.

You can also take partial route but check for the correct bus and you need to check which stop to alight. Unfortunately despite being a popular tourism attraction bus drivers can’t communicate in English. Good luck if you encounter locals who can speak English.

Jeju Island: Hiking Olle Trail #7

We had such a great time on our fist Olle Trail hike with the locals, we wanted to hike more! And we had an extra day with nothing planned to do just that! Learning about our extra day, the more experienced hikers in the group told us to hike Olle Trail #7 – the most beautiful trail from their experience. I always listen to the local, so trail #7 it was!

The Trail

Olle Trail #7 is 17.7 km long and takes 5-6 hours to hike! It is super easy to follow with these beautiful blue and yellow ribbons every few steps:

There are also a few signs mentioning how far you’ve come and how much longer you have to go. I was definitely grateful for these near the end of the hike!

It’s an easy hike! No climbing. Just super long. Most of it is along the ocean, but there are some parts that go through the road and farm fields, which was fascinating to see. But of course, it was always refreshing to come back to the ocean!

The Views

You know the hike will be good when this is the view before you even start hiking…

Five minutes into the hike, the view gets even better somehow…

We immediately knew that this would be a very slow 5 – 6 hours. How can you not stop and look at everything?!!!

We kept walking in awe…

The Lonely Rock

A few more minutes into the walk, we encountered Oedolgae, a gorgeous rock named for it’s loneliness:

For some reason, maybe because I’m a lonely nomad, going against the normalcy of society, this rock really touched me…

Women Divers

On our tour around the island with Yeha Tours, we learned about the amazing women divers of Jeju Island. It is the women of the island that do all the work – take care of the house, childcare, earning money, and anything else. The husband is considered king and doesn’t do anything… It is a super hard life for the women!

The Beophwan Village, along the Olle trail #7, used to have the highest number of Henyo – women divers – women who made money by diving and selling fish. It is an extremely tough life – many are crying while they’re diving. They’re extremely tough – able to hold their breath underwater at 20 meters without any mask for as long as two minutes!

When I saw a restaurant owned by women divers, I had to go there out of respect (and curiosity to meet these women):

I knew that octopus was the hardest and best to catch, so I ordered the octopus dish. The women made the food right in front of me!

I got my snack 🐙

While sitting there in the restaurant, I saw a huge school of dolphins swimming right by us!! I told the other couple that was there and we all rushed outside to watch!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many dolphins, and right from the shore like that!

Volcanic Beaches

One of the other cool thing about this hike is how many volcanic rock beaches you walk by! I loved climbing on them:

Or just sitting there enjoying the view…

Oh, and the black rock looked INCREDIBLE against the blooming rape seed flowers…

Wolpyeong Pogu Port

Just when we thought we’ve seen all the beauty during the hike, the Olle trail surprised us with one more breathtaking sight at the end – the Wolpyeong Pogu Port! An old traditional port that is beautiful in the moonlight. But it wasn’t that bad in the daylight either…

That picture doesn’t do it justice. The water was truly spectacular.

I wanted to stay on that beach forever!

Conclusion

“Olle Trail Route 7 is a spectacular trekking route crowned with pine trees and the rich Pacific sunshine. With Bumseom and Moonseum Islands peaking out in the horizon, this trail is most renowned for its beautiful scenery and tranquility. With so many travelers coming to this trail for rejuvenation, healing, and gratitude, it is no wonder that locals refer to this route as the road of peace, the road of nature, the road of joy, and the road of reconciliation.” ~ Vuecrest Gallery sign

Yep, that sign sums it up. I felt all of those things! If you do one Olle Trail route on Jeju Island, make it #7!

Happy hiking!

Island’s walking trail listed among top 10 best coastal walks by UK magazine

By Jun Ji-hye

Hiking and walking trips have become one of the trending activities during the continued COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a survey conducted by the World Trail Network, with respondents in 10 countries, 75 percent of the trails that responded have seen an increase in new trail users, such as families and young people, during the various stages of lockdowns.

Some trails in North America have observed a 200 to 500 percent increase in the number of users.

In a recent survey conducted by the Korea Tourism Organization, walking trails were selected as the safest travel destination as well, chosen by 50.4 percent of respondents.

Walking trips have become more popular not only because the trips offer a chance to marvel at breathtaking scenery, but also because people tend to prefer quiet and less crowded destinations amid the prolonged public health crisis.

The country’s southern island of Jeju boasts the Jeju Olle Trail, a 425-kilometer footpath that connects the coasts of Jeju and consists of 26 routes.

If you wonder which routes to choose among the 26, you can refer to the following recommendations made by Jeju Olle hikers who have completed the entire long-distance trail.

The Jeju Olle Foundation said that it conducted a survey on 2,778 thru-hikers who have completed all the routes over the past year, and Route 7 was selected as the best route, chosen by 35.8 percent of respondents, followed by Route 10 at 32.3 percent and Route 18-1 at 24.6 percent.
