Single’s Inferno: Netflix Korea’s answer to Love Island

It comes as no surprise that yet another Korean-made Netflix show has wiggled its way into the Global Top 10 ranks. Dark dramas Squid Game (2021), My Name (2021) and Hellbound (2021) wowed fans across the globe, paving the way for future Korean titles to make their mark on international audiences. So what comes next? Another equally dark drama or thriller? It’s nothing of the sort. It’s a dating reality show, featuring a dozen hot, young Korean singles on an island, named ‘Single’s Inferno.’

Single’s Inferno: The Set Up

Single’s Inferno is the first Korean reality show to make the global top 10. The show’s format is reminiscent of that of Love Island, the globally popular British show that now has US and Australian versions.

Contestants must mix and mingle in order to find a match. They all work together to survive on a sweltering hot island, with basic food and limited facilities. Every so often, they are called down to the beach to compete in a challenge, where the winners will have the opportunity to take their person of choice on a special date, or even to Paradise, the luxury hotel away from Inferno. In Paradise, couples can order and eat until their heart’s content, enjoy proper shower facilities and a private room.

What are the rules of the show? As per the ‘stranded on a desert island’ theme, none of the contestants have access to the outside world. They cannot use their phones or any other communicative technology — or a clock, it seems. Furthermore, the respective age and occupation of each member is kept secret. That is, until they visit Paradise, where they are permitted to discuss with their date partner.

Single’s Inferno: The People

In the first episode, we meet the original island line up of 9 members (5 men, 4 women.)

Although Love Island has historically consisted of normal people -albeit, with a higher than average level of fitness and personal grooming- Korean viewers may recognise some of the Single’s Inferno contestants as celebrities. For instance, YouTuber and influencer Song Ji-a, and TRIPLEME member Choi Si-hun.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CYOUw1IlRfY/

Keen K-Pop fans may even recognise newest member, Cha Hyun-seung as the backup dancer for big names like Sunmi and EXO.

The Hook

So why is this reality show gaining so many international views? Well, many people have questioned the popularity of Love Island, while others hail it as their favourite show. Indeed, dating reality shows are certainly something you either love or you hate. Nonetheless, Single’s Inferno makes for a fascinating display of cultural differences.

While UK reality shows have no problem airing one’s dirty laundry, Koreans like to keep things PG. Despite the show’s theme of love and romance, Single’s Inferno sees separate living quarters for the girls and boys, both on the island and in Paradise. What’s more, despite over half the season’s episodes having aired already, the steamiest action viewers have seen is some hand holding.

The added secrecy of age and occupation is also a new concept for foreign viewers. Although we can assume that the island dwellers are all in their 20s and 30s, age and occupation are important factors for many prospective Korean singles. Additionally, you won’t see any swearing or fighting on this show. The show definitely shake likes to shake things up, but the contestants remain civil.

The Controversy

On the topic of cultural differences, Single’s Inferno has already faced backlash for comments made by the show’s male contestants, as well as the commentators. The reality show sees a running commentary and discussion between well-known Korean celebrities: actress Lee Da-hee, comedian Hong Jin-kyung and singers Kyuhyun and Hanhae.

The controversy came when the commentators, along with the contestants, admired the ‘whiteness’ and ‘paleness’ of Shin Ji-yeong’s skin. Foreigners living in Korea will know that skin tone can indeed be a measurement of beauty. However, the backlash faced by such a popular Korean show may be an eye-opener. Furthermore, it could even encourage a more welcoming society for people of colour.

‘Single’s Inferno’ Producers Talk Why a Reunion Special Won’t Happen and Thoughts on a Season 2

TL;DR:

Single’s Inferno contestants faced criticism and a scandal after the series ended.

The Single’s Inferno producers reveal if a reunion special is possible.

A second season of the dating series would have a new fresh cast.

While a dating reality show may come to an end, fans look foward to the drama-filled reunion specials. Netflix debuted its first South Korean dating show, Single’s Inferno, on Dec. 18, 2021. While the dating series was a success, the contestants faced backlash. Single’s Inferno producers explain what comes next and if a reunion special is a possibility.

Song Ji-a, Kim Hyeon-joong and others faced scrutiny after ‘Single’s Inferno’

Fans were hooked on watching the dating show to see who sparks love and will ultimately leave the deserted island together. Fan-favorite couples made it to the end, but the real problems began after the contestants went home. While Single’s Inferno was filmed in the summer of 2021, the contestants felt the push of a global audience after the finale.

Many of the main cast faced hurtful comments and rumors. Fans felt the series inappropriately used Kang So-yeon’s age, and fans later criticized her for some of her actions toward Oh Jin-taek. Moon Se-hoon was also criticized for his “obsessive” behavior toward Shin Ji-yeon.

Se-hoon has since done Q&A videos discussing his feelings toward hate comments and blaming the staff for bad editing. He was not the only one as Hyeon-joong received malicious comments for his “rude” and “standoffish” demeanor on Single’s Inferno.

The one contestant to get the brute end of criticism was Ji-a. She enamored fans with her looks and fashion sense. After the finale, online fans noticed a majority of her designer items were fake, causing an extreme scandal. Ji-a has since apologized and vanished from social media.

Netflix Tudum spoke with producers Kim Jae-won and Kim Na-hyun about their thoughts on the series and its success. The producers talked about casting the contestants, where the deserted island is located, and some of the contestants knowing each other beforehand. Fans might be more interested to know if a Single’s Inferno reunion special is planned for the future.

Sorry to say, but a reunion special will likely not happen. “As of now, unfortunately, we don’t have a reunion special planned. Following the show, some of the participants suffered backlash on social media. I don’t want to add to the burden of these participants, who have gone back to their everyday lives,” explained Kim.

In hindsight, the producers are right not to be hopeful of developing a Single’s Inferno reunion special. While American dating series are accustomed to public backlash, comments, and more, South Korea is a different ball game. Thankfully, the Single’s Inferno contestants have become close friends since the finale.

Producers want to see a second season on Netflix

Fans are desperate for a Single’s Inferno Season 2, but Netflix has yet to approve it. When the series first premiered, they had ideas of how they would continue for a second season. They contemplated changing some of the challenges for Paradise, among other things.

Producer Kim is also looking foward to a new season, saying, “We want to bring a second season to you as well. If we end up doing so, I hope another batch of charming contestants will apply.”

The Single’s Inferno producers previously explained they contacted contestants through Instagram DM’s and received suggestions from friends. They will likely follow a similar idea for a new round of contestants in season two. So-yeon explained in a Q&A video that anyone could apply to be in the series.

Korean show Change Days on Netflix is more awkward than Love Island

A South Korean reality show is rising in popularity on UK Netflix, based on a similar premise to Love Island, but with bucket loads of awkwardness.

Change Days, produced by KakaoTV, now in its second season, sees four couples meet at a romantic getaway on the Jeju Island resort – a popular holiday destination in South Korea.

These real-life couples are on the brink of breaking up and have to choose between mending their current relationships or pursuing new relationships with the other contestants’ partners.

The show is a first of its kind for usually conservative South Korea and viewers have taken to social media to blast it for ‘encouraging cheating’, and saying some partners ‘deserve better’ while another criticised female contestant Hye-Yeong for ‘gaslighting’ her partner Tae-Wan and said they ‘hope she remains single’.

YunSeul and Tae-Wan are shy on their date and despite finding each other attractive, don’t go for a second date. She admits ‘my mind is on my boyfriend’

A look of fury: HuiHyeon says of love rival Hyeyeon ‘She’s not his type, I’m better than her’ as she watches her boyfriend DoHyeong leave with her to go dolphin spotting on the sea

People can’t stop watching it, even if they think it’s ‘cheating’ or ‘stupid’

While the show is not as steamy as Love Island, it’s even more awkward viewing as long-term partners liaise with new flames right under their lovers’ noses at the dinner table,

In the first episode, the couples were filmed sitting in their cars discussing how they feel about each other going on a date with someone else. While some partners were clearly jealous and protective, others did not seem bothered.

Hye-yeon,29 was open-minded, stating that her younger partner Tae-Wan,25 was ‘too immature’ and said she wanted to find someone she can ‘lean on’ emotionally.

As she freshened her lipstick in the car before her date, Tae-wan chastised her for wearing a thigh-skimming skirt, and asked her to cover up – to no avail.

Hye-Yeon tells of her boyfriend’s immaturity, as she is 29 and he is 25, and wants someone she can ‘lean on’

Hye-yeon and her date hit it off before heading to a museum and taking photos of each other.

Afterwards she confessed: ‘I didn’t think about my boyfriend all day,’ before smiling to the cameras.

Another couple,HyoGi and YunSeul said they have ‘broken up 30 times in 500 days’ and ‘fight over everything’.

It became clear very quickly that HypGi had chemistry with his new date HuiHyoen, as they discovered they both come from Jeju Island and share a love for the local delicacy, beef intestines.

He says ‘I feel so comfortable with you, I’ve never had so much in common with someone before.’

He even asked her blood type – which for some might not be the ideal date question.

People have picked out their favorites but are shocked as the show takes awkward twists and turns and jealousy seems to preside over all

The couples then arrived at a luxury villa boasting a large living room, a beautiful terrace area and large dining table for the couples to sit at.

The first to arrive were a Ji-yu and Tae-Wan that didn’t get on well on the date, with Ji-yu saying to the cameras: ‘I’m thinking about my boyfriend the whole time’.

They sat awkwardly waiting for the others to arrive and said: ‘Let’s just pretend we had a great time.’

As the couples sheepishly filed in everyone was sizing each other up at the dinner table, but trying to be friendly.

Opening up about why they were on the trip, HuiHyeon who has been with her partner JeongHun on and off for five years, said: ‘He’s leaving to go in the army soon, we broke up before because it was clear I wasn’t his priority.

‘I’m 27 and want to get married at 29 or 30, I’m financially stable enough to get married now, but he isn’t.’

JeongHun a former idol singer, clearly heartbroken at the prospect of breaking up, said: ‘It would be selfish of me to ask her to wait for me, but I would like her to.’

In South Korea it is mandatory for all males to serve in the army for two years – due to ongoing tensions with the North, and many choose to remain single during their stint.

Another couple, Maths teacher DoHyeong and Jiyu said: ‘We broke up three years ago, and we can’t solve issues, we never talk it out. We just go silent on each other.’

DoHyeong was ghosted by his long term love JiYu and says he now has ‘trust issues’ because of it

THAT awkward dinner, where an intercom announces the couples that will date again, and the partners can barely hide their discontent as they drink wine and eat luxury food

DoHyeong said ‘I wish she would just yell or even swear at me – but she doesn’t, we avoid conflict.

‘On the outside we are a very fun couple, but on the inside it’s not like that – she ghosted me when we broke up and I have trust issues.’

JiYu said: ‘I know I shouldn’t have ghosted him but he just didn’t have time for me, I would ask to see him and he would be busy with his friends and after two miserable weeks of him not texting me, I decided to walk away.’

The couples were asked via text if they would like to ask their date out again. And during the dinner an overhead announcer, not unlike the UK’s Big Brother voice announced which couples would see each other again.

HyoGi and HuiHyeon the pair from Jeju Island, who kept grinning and staring at each other throughout the meal, while their irritated long-term partners could barely contain their jealousy, were announced as the first couple to meet again.

HuiHeyon’s boyfriend JeongHung confessed: ‘I felt so angry in that moment and that they hit it off. Why else would they want to see each other again and not try and date someone else?’

HyoGi and his girlfriend YunSeul who have ‘broken up 30 times’ had an argument in their room, culminating in the girlfriend sobbing on the floor as her boyfriend reeled off comparisons to his new date.

He said: ‘We got on. We have a lot in common, she likes beef intestines and that is what we are going to eat tomorrow. Yes I did compare you both, and it reminded me of what disappoints me about you. You scowl at me all the time and I liked her smile, I told her she was cute.’

YunSeul was seen sobbing on the bathroom floor as her boyfriend De-Heyoung casually brushed his teeth and told her how he liked his date from that day, and called her ‘cute’ something she says she ‘can’t forgive him for’

The couples eat and drink on the first night together, airing their relationship woes. Plenty of awkward silences and sizing up was seen before the lovers went to their separate bedrooms.

Tae-Wan didn’t want Hye-yeon to come near him as she was announced as part the second couple to go on another date the next day, on a boat trip with to see dolphins.

She tried to comfort him but he stared at his phone in anger.

The next day, four were left in the villa as their partners went out to enjoy a romantic date, and vented to each other about their anger and jealousy.

JiYu said: ‘I’m surprised, if she was his type I would understand, but she isn’t, I think I’m better than her.’

Tae-Wan confessed: ‘I just feel he’s giving things I can’t, because I’m younger than her so I can’t offer that. In all honesty I wanted to be in the fire service, but I know she wants to get married so I took a job in personal training to make money.’

On arriving home from his date, HyoGi who hit it off with HuiHyeon who shared his love of beef intestines and blood type B spotted his partner YunSeul smoking outside with Tae-Wan, her initial first date.

‘He never made time for me’ DoHeyong and JiYu explain why their relationships is in crisis on a therapy style couch

The judges gush as JeongHun and JiYu clasp their mouths at exactly the same time – but they decided not to date again.

HyoGi seemingly forgot about his perfect date with HuiHyeon the ‘woman he has so much in common with’ and stormed outside.

He said: ‘So you’re smiling and happy with him, but you don’t want me to be happy and talk to females.’

YunSeul replied: ‘What were we meant to do, sit here and be miserable all day?’

The couples have two weeks to make a decision with clips showing people saying ‘You aren’t exactly the person I want to marry’ and ‘Did your heart flutter on our first date?’.

They can choose to go home and work on their relationship, start a new relationship or go solo at the end of the trial.

The first season aired with three couples and one week on the Island but producers have ramped it up for the second season with four couples and two weeks.

For this new binge-worthy dating reality series, five male and four female contestants meet for the first time on an unknown deserted island. The island is known as “Inferno.” The contestants are unaware of each other’s personal lives, professions, and ages. All they know is each other’s names.

The contestants must survive on Inferno by fetching their own water, cooking meals with the food provided each day, and the sweltering heat. During this time, the contestants get to know each other and who they possibly have feelings or an attraction for.

Part of Single’s Inferno’s rules has the contestants give anonymous votes for the person they like. During the nine days on the island, the two contestants who match to become a couple get to leave the Inferno to Paradise. Paradise is another remote island with a luxury resort where the couple can finally reveal personal details about themselves.

The Korean dating reality show has a similar addicting quality like ‘Love Island’

Netflix’s Korean reality show will seem familiar to CBS’s Love Island fans. According to the CBS official page, “Every few days the Islanders pair up and those who are not coupled are at risk of being dumped from the island. Islanders are on the lookout for romance, but the road to love doesn’t always run smoothly. Challenges abound with intriguing new Islander arrivals and dramatic twists as friendships and relationships form.”

Single’s Inferno follows a similar format where an unknown voice gives the contestants a challenge every day. The winner of each challenge gets a certain perk to gain the upper hand at wooing their love interest. One contestant’s feelings for another might not be reciprocated or not exist the next day.

One fan on Reddit commented, “I think the concept of the show is interesting, and it’s too soon to judge who I like best and who I wanna ship with who. But it will be interesting to see if any couple actually blooms from this show.”

Each participant has qualities that either persuade or disenchant the viewers to root for them. It is a question of love being subjective or genuine.

The Demand Distribution curve illustrates how a TV show’s popularity compares to the demand benchmark, which is a measure of the average demand across all titles. The curve is divided into performance buckets, ranging from “Below Average” to “Exceptional”. A show falls into one of these performance buckets depending on how many times more or less demand it has compared to the demand benchmark.

The show’s performance is market-specific, e.g. the same show can be in the “Average” range in the United States and in the “Good” range in France.

As an example, if a show has 9 times more demand than the demand benchmark, it falls in the “Outstanding” performance range; only 2.7% of all shows in the market reach this high level of demand.

8 Korean Dating Reality Shows That Will Reawaken Your Dead Love Cells

Korean dating reality shows

Many of us are familiar with dating reality shows such as Love Is Blind, Terrace House, and Love Island. These shows are often described as a guilty pleasure – they are generally frowned upon, but somehow they manage to secure a wide audience.

Korean dating reality shows are slightly different as they are not viewed as a guilty pleasure, and the country is a land of lovebirds brimming with cute couples everywhere you go. If you are curious about Korea’s dating culture, these eight dating reality shows on our list will help shed some light.

1. Heart Signal

With a total of three seasons, Heart Signal is one of the most popular dating reality shows in the country. Heart Signal follows eight participants – four men and four women. They have to live together in a shared space for a month while going on dates and getting to know each other.

These participants come from all walks of life, with occupations ranging from lawyers to chefs, and there’s even a traditional Korean medicine doctor!

Although the participants are allowed to develop feelings for each other, they are not allowed to express their interest directly. Instead, every member gets to anonymously send a message to the person they are interested in.

Also, there is a panel of celebrities and experts who watch these eight members to predict the possible “love lines”.

Season one of Heart Signal aired in 2017, followed by season two in 2018. Season three aired in 2020.

A show titled Friends was produced in 2021, and it featured some of the participants from seasons two and three. Unlike Heart Signal, which mainly focuses on romantic relationships, Friends is about developing both friendships and romantic relationships.

2. EXchange

EXchange first aired in June 2021. It’s a reality show where four couples who have broken up come together to look back on their relationship and ultimately find new love. Some participants hope to reunite with their exes, while others are ready to meet someone new.

This show focuses on the inner world of the couples. In order to capture their raw and genuine emotions, the production crew remains hidden and the participants do not know when they are being filmed. This enables a realistic and unfiltered portrayal of the participants.

Lee Jin-joo, the producer of EXchange, said that casting the eight participants was not easy, and the process took close to five months.

Initially, there were about 100 participants who expressed interest. However, after she revealed what EXchange is about, there were only two or three participants who stayed till the end. The production team even had to contact and persuade the participants’ ex-partners to join EXchange.

3. Love Catcher

Love is complex. Throw in money and the situation gets even more complicated.

In Love Catcher, there are ten participants divided into two groups – “love catchers” and “money catchers”. “Love catchers” are in it to find a partner, while “money catchers” participate to bring home KRW50,000,000 (~USD44,730).

Love Catcher features participants who live together for a month under the same roof, and panelists who offer advice. At the start of the show, participants have to choose whether they want to be a “love catcher” or “money catcher”. This status is kept secret from the rest of the participants throughout the show.

There are rules that all participants must abide by. Firstly, love catchers should strive to avoid money catchers since they can’t be paired up eventually. Secondly, money catchers can only win the prize money if they find a love catcher. When two money catchers are paired, they will be eliminated from the game.

The two keywords that summarise this dating reality show are: Hell Island and Heaven Island. Gaining traction as the new Netflix hit, Single’s Inferno involves six men and six women who are trapped on an island.

Although the premise of this show revolves around finding a romantic partner, it’s also about survival. Participants must be partnered up in order to escape Hell Island and advance to Heaven Island. Those who fail to achieve this criteria will remain in Hell Island.

Couples who make it to Heaven Island get to enjoy a luxurious night at a grand hotel. On the other hand, singles who are left behind in Hell Island will have to endure the night with substandard accommodation, such as sleeping in tents.

In Somebody, all the participants are dancers.

The cast of Somebody comprises ten professional dancers who specialise in different genres, such as Korean traditional dance, hip-hop, and ballet. Each dancer has to carry out an individual performance in front of participants of the opposite gender. Participants who show interest in a particular dancer get to choose a song for them to dance to.

The participants even have to film a dance music video as a pair to show off their dance skills and chemistry.

Choi Jung-yoon, the producer of Somebody, said that she tried to cast participants who are the most earnest and dedicated not only in terms of dancing, but also in building a romantic relationship through the show.

There are two seasons: the first season aired from November 2018 to February 2019, while the second season aired from October 2019 to December 2019.

Divorced Singles is about four divorced men and four divorced women who come together to find love and romance. However, this show goes beyond finding a potential life partner – matched couples will cohabit for a week during the show.

Divorced Singles grapples with an unconventional format as participants get to know each other without revealing their age, background, occupation, and why they got divorced in the first place.

The backgrounds of all eight participants vary, ranging from a divorcee of eight years to a divorcee of one year.

The first episode aired on 11th July 2021, and the participants were given their first mission by the production team. They were divided into two teams, and the first team was tasked to grocery shop while the second team was assigned to cook.

This show attempts to tackle the question, “Can a friendship between a man and a woman be purely platonic?”

Love & Joy is co-organised with YouTube stars Enjoy Couple, a Korean channel with more than two million subscribers. The channel is owned by a comedian couple of eight years, Son-Min-soo and Lim Lala.

Besides co-organising the show, Son Min-soo and Lim Lala also play the role of the host, cupid, and relationship mentor in Love & Joy. Whenever participants face any problems or struggles, Son Min-soo and Lim Lala will listen attentively and give advice.

Besides talking about their relationship troubles and worries, the three couples are also paired with a partner that’s not their current significant other. They get to know each other, go on dates, and even share a room together.

Eventually, the six participants must make a decision to either work on their current relationship or break up and begin a new journey with a different partner.

The first episode of Change Days aired on 18th May 2021, and the show came to a close on 7th September. At the end of season one of Change Days, the production team announced that they will be back with season two.

Love Land (South Korea)

Sculpture garden

An interactive sculpture at Love Land.

Jeju Loveland (제주러브랜드) (also known as Love Land) is an outdoor sculpture park which opened in 2004 on Jeju Island in South Korea. The park is focused on a theme of sex, running sex education films, and featuring 140 sculptures representing humans in various sexual positions. It also has other elements such as large phallus statues, stone labia, and hands-on exhibits such as a “masturbation-cycle”. The park’s website describes the location as “a place where love oriented art and eroticism meet”.

Background [ edit ]

During the 1970s, Jeju Island became a popular honeymoon destination for Korean couples, due to the island’s warm climate and Cold War-era restrictions on overseas travel. Many of the couples had wed because of arranged marriages, and the island also became known for being a center of sex education. According to an article in Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine, in the late 1980s journalist and travel writer Simon Winchester reported that some hotel employees on the island performed as “professional icebreakers”. In the evenings, the hotel would offer an entertainment program featuring erotic elements, to help newlyweds relax.

In 2002, graduates of Seoul’s Hongik University began creating sculptures for the park, which opened on November 16, 2004. Encompassing an area the size of “two soccer fields”, all of the sculptures can be viewed in approximately one hour, and there is an additional monthly rotating exhibit featuring works by different Korean artists.

Visitors are required to be at least 18 years old, and a separate play area is available for minors while adults visit. The play area is themed on anime.
